Director of the Teaching and Learning Center

Mitchell College invites applications for the founding Director of our Center for Teaching and Learning. The Center will serve 150 full-time and adjunct faculty members, professional tutors, and learning and writing specialists. The Director will advance excellence in teaching and learning by creating, managing, and sustaining innovative and collaborative programs to support faculty development for excellence in teaching. Mitchell College is a student-centered learning environment in which diversity is valued and ability-based education is emphasized. The Center’s programs will include pedagogy workshops, faculty-led seminars, individual and/or departmental program consultations, and the establishment of a library of electronic and print resources.

The Director will collaborate with constituencies across the College to advance performance-based, student-centered learning and enhance student retention. This individual will be responsible for all essential operations of the Center, including planning and developing programs, the support of teaching evaluations with department chairs, providing oversight of an assistant and a webpage designer, preparing the Center budget and developing success indicators. The Director will work closely with the academic dean and department chairs to provide teaching support for faculty, to recognize and reward the integrative and innovative use of teaching strategies and technologies, to further development of a collegial learning community, and to strengthen the “culture of assessment” across the curriculum. It is expected that the Director will teach at least one course each year.

The successful candidate will have teaching experience at the college or university level,; a record of accomplishment in the scholarship of learning, teaching, and assessment; knowledge of theories, models and best practices in learning, teaching and assessment; a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively across disciplines with administrators, faculty and students; and the ability to provide leadership, facilitate programs and value innovation through excellent written and oral communication skills. The successful candidate will be knowledgeable about assistive technology as well as classroom, instructional and facilities accommodations for students with disabilities. A Ph.D. is strongly preferred.
