Mission Statement

Mitchell College, a private institution of higher education, provides a transforming educational experience. Within a diverse and student-centered community and with an emphasis on holistic student development, Mitchell College supports individual learning differences, nurtures untapped academic potential, and instills professional knowledge and skills necessary for students to contribute to an ever-changing world.

The Mitchell Seal

The Mitchell Seal represents the educational mission and vision of the College. The Latin inscription ‘scientia’ and ‘liberitas’ signify the two academic degrees, the sciences and the liberal arts. The lighthouse depicted in the center of the Seal pays tribute to Mitchell’s location on the Thames River at the mouth of Long Island Sound. The lighthouse and its beams of light symbolize both a beacon of guidance for students and their search for knowledge.

The C.A.R.E.S. Values Model

In an era of near overwhelming challenge and change, there exists a great need for soundly held values and beliefs. Mitchell College recognizes this need and embraces the C.A.R.E.S. model, a framework enabling students to understand and nurture five principled values. We believe these five values provide meaning and a sense of purpose to one’s life, and our community of scholars, mentors and role models is committed to nurturing them both inside and outside of the classroom.

C = Citizenship (promoting such virtues as moral maturity, commitment and respect)

A = Achievement (establishing expectations and goals and ways to reach them)

R = Respect (celebrating a world of differences and fostering a sensitive understanding of cultural

E = Engagement(involving the student in learning opportunities beyond the classroom)

S = Service (becoming involved in one’s community and giving of oneself for the betterment of others)
