Student Activities
The staff and faculty at Mitchell College believe that involvement in extra-curricular activities leads to personal growth and that academic success is strengthened through exposure to various leadership and citizenship opportunities. Students are expected to become involved in campus activities outside the classroom. Participation in clubs, intramural's, weekend trips, service programs, and other campus or community activities enhance the College experience for all students.

Student Government Association
The Student Government Association, known as the “SGA” on campus is the parent organization for all other clubs and organizations. Each spring, the student body elects a slate of officers to lead the SGA and establish an agenda to address issues and sponsor activities for the college community.
Clubs and Organizations
Student clubs and organizations are a reflection of student, faculty, and staff interests. Each year new clubs are formed to match the interests of the Mitchell community. Currently, the College sponsors co-curricular academic clubs, including the Business Club, the Behavioral Sciences Club (visit website), the Early Childhood Education Club, and the Pre-Law Society. In addition, several academic honor societies are active on the campus, including Phi Theta Kappa and Psi Beta. The Student Government Association's Executive Board provides leadership for campus involvement groups, such as the Campus Activities Board, Student Athlete Board, Leadership Advisory Board, Commuter Association, and Residence Hall Council. Extracurricular clubs and organizations such as the African American Alliance, Dance Club, Hillel, Pequot Drama Society, Radio Club, Outdoor Adventure Society, Gaming Club, and the Thames Log (yearbook) are all ways for students to contribute to the betterment of the Mitchell College community while making friends and gaining important life skills.
Campus Activities
Each semester the Students Activities Office coordinates a variety of programs around themes, including Alcohol Awareness Week, Hispanic Heritage Week, Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Wellness Week and more. The Student Activities Office also plans special all college functions such as Orientation, Graduation Week and Parent/Family Weekend. In addition, all clubs and organizations will sponsor a variety of programs and activities to meet the social, recreational, and educational needs of students.
Campus events are posted in The Lobster Trap, a weekly publication of the Student Activities Office.
Commuter Students
A significant portion of the Mitchell College student population is made up of commuting students, who have chosen to live at home while attending college on a full-time or part-time basis. Commuting students are a vital segment of the Mitchell community and the College offers a variety of programs and services to meet the needs of this special group.
The Commuter Student Association provides the Mitchell College commuter student population with a place to meet and socialize with other commuting students. It is also a good place to express concerns specific to commuting students. The Commuter Student Association meets weekly, usually during the lunch hour. All are welcome, though the agenda items are most relevant to commuting students.
Commuter students are eligible to participate in a campus meal plan offered through Sodexho dining services. A variety of options are available and students should contact the Sodexho Office on the first floor of the Clarke Center for more information.
Commuters can keep up-to-date on campus activities through the Lobster Trap, a weekly publication of the Student Activities Office. For more information about the services available to commuting students contact the Office of Student Activities at (860) 701-5052.
International Students
Mitchell College has a small number of international students who join the College community and live on campus. Recognizing that it is difficult to adjust in a different country, a new culture and a diverse educational system, Mitchell College provides support, academically and socially, for international students. It is necessary for the whole campus community to be aware of and understand the cultural differences that exist between students. All international students are encouraged to use Mitchell College services, seek assistance for their concerns, and become involved in campus activities. One of the Admissions Office Staff serves as the designated official to authorize all immigration related paperwork (visa, I-20 form, etc.). All Mitchell College students who are interested in learning about other cultures, learning and practicing another language, or just making a new friend are encouraged to help our international students, especially those who are new to the campus/area.
MVP Program
The MVP (Mitchell Valued Potential) program annually awards competitive merit scholarships to students based on their potential to contribute to the Mitchell College community and the greater New London community. MVP awards are awarded to students who demonstrate potential in leadership, voluntarism or academics. Assessment for an MVP award is made during the on-campus interview and during the application process to Mitchell College. MVP awards for upper-class students are based on the student's performance in and commitment to the program while maintaining the appropriate grade point average. Student must reapply for the MVP scholarship each year.
New Student Orientation
Prior to the start of the academic year, new students participate in a comprehensive New Student Orientation program. This “pre-college” experience allows new students to become comfortable with their new community and to learn about the academic and social standards of Mitchell College. Students will have the opportunity to interact with faculty, staff, and students through a variety of workshops and activities. A program for parents is provided, as well. Parents and guardians are encouraged to participate.
Family Weekend
Each Fall, the Mitchell College community invites parents and families of current students to campus for a weekend of special events. During the weekend, a variety of social, cultural, and educational events are planned for students and their families. Family Weekend is a great time for students and families to interact with Mitchell faculty and staff in informal settings.
Religious & Spiritual Organizations
We know many of our students want to know about the spiritual and religious opportunities in the greater New London community near the College's campus. Click here for a list of organizations in our area. Shuttles on the weekend are available.
