Residence Life

Live with a small group of students in one of four restored historic homes at the water's edge , or join a larger group in one of Mitchell's three traditional residence halls on the upper campus . Whichever you choose, you will find comfortable, well-appointed surroundings in a warm, close-knit community environment.

That's what makes Mitchell so appealing-a delightful mix of traditional New England styles with up-to-the-minute features that college students (and their parents!) will appreciate. Every residence hall room is set up with a T-1 computer connection, telephone and cable hook-up, and a combination microwave/refrigerator. Laundry facilities are located within each residence hall.

Each Residence Hall is managed by a team of Residence Life staff members who live and work within each residence hall. The Residence Hall Director is a live-in professional who along with a staff of four to six undergraduate Resident Assistants (RAs) ensure that the best living-learning environment. There are leadership opportunities for all residents within each residence hall. Hall Councils are student-elected hall governments that address residence concerns and sponsor programming within the hall. In addition, RAs perform monthly programs/events for their residents.

Mitchell College believes in the importance of on-campus residential living as part of the college experience. As such, all full time Mitchell students must live in residence halls unless they live in a home year round with a parent, spouse or guardian. The college does consider petitions of older and upper class students to live independently in the local community.

Waterfront Community

The Waterfront consists of three restored historic houses located right on the banks of the Thames River: Fairhaven, Moorings, and Harbor House. The Waterfront is considered to be a quiet area to live on campus as there are fewer students living in these halls. Upper-class students reside in the Waterfront residence halls.

Fairhaven: This is an all-male residence hall with a fully equipped kitchen, laundry room and lounge. There are 24 residents living in Fairhaven along with a Resident Assistant and a Residence Hall Director. Fairhaven is comprised of all double bedrooms.

Moorings: The all-female house on the Waterfront, Moorings is home to twenty-six residents and two Resident Assistants. It has a laundry room and a large lounge with river and dock views, in addition to a beautiful wrap-around porch. Moorings is unique in that it is one of two halls on campus that offers a select number of single bedrooms, as well as double and triple rooms.

Harbor House: Our smallest community on campus, Harbor House consists of a mixture of single and double bedrooms. There are thirteen students that reside in this house as well as the Residence Hall Director's office and a student lounge. There is one Resident Assistant who lives in this building.

Upper-Campus Residence Halls

Saunders Residence Hall: This four-story building features first-year housing. Over one hundred residents call Saunders home. With a staff of six Resident Assistants (RAs) and one Residence Hall Director this hall offers double bedrooms, a large common area on the first floor, vending, and laundry facilities. Saunders offers a sports-oriented floor which is comprised of student-athletes and other residents who are interested in sport activity.

Matteson Residence Hall: This hall is the second of two that houses first-year students. Matteson is comprised of double bedrooms in the four-storied building. The staff includes six resident assistants (RAs) and a Residence Hall Director. A large common area, laundry and vending are found on the first floor. Matteson offers a sports-oriented floor which is comprised of student-athletes and other residents who are interested in sport activity.

Simpson Residence Hall: An upper-class four-story residence hall with over 120 residents, this four story building is comprised of double bedrooms. With a staff of six Resident Assistants and one Residence Hall Director, this building offers a large common area, laundry and vending on the first floor.

New Residence Hall

Well over 100 Mitchell College students will have a new home-away-from-home when construction on the new 38,000 square foot residence hall is completed this August.  The new four-story residence hall sits at the end of Di Biasi drive between Matteson Hall and the Yarnall Center. With coveted amenities such as air conditioning, study space and laundry facilities, the building will be first choice for many students.  On-campus housing is selected on a lottery system based on credits completed and will house juniors and seniors. The entire building is wireless and handicap accessible, and informal learning spaces, lounges and common areas have been created to facilitate collaborative studies. The exterior of the building has been designed with a classic New England charm in keeping with the shoreline environment and the surrounding residential neighborhood.
