Mitchell Valued Potential (MVP)
The Mitchell Valued Potential (MVP) organization has been in existence at Mitchell College since 1994. The MVP awards are competitive merit scholarships based on an individual student's potential to contribute to the college and surrounding community. There are currently 140 students in the organization actively supporting our community. MVP students are required to perform at least 20 hours of community service each semester.
MVP students meet every other week. These meetings are typically hosted by a speaker who facilitates a discussion on varying aspects of Leadership. This is also the time when MVP students are made aware of potential community service opportunities on campus and in our community.
As a group we have had many accomplishments. The MVP students have volunteered all over New London County in many capacities. Our annual events include: March of Dimes' WalkAmerica, Red Cross Blood Drives, Read Across New London, Mystic Places Marathon, and our Admissions' Open House visitation days. Our students also work with local soup kitchens, Alliance for Living, Covenant Shelter and the Special Olympics. We have plenty of opportunities for students to get their hours done on campus: helping with the school newspaper, as a tour guide in Admissions, technical assistant in the Science Department, assisting with our varsity teams, coordinating student activities ... and the list goes on!
Students new to Mitchell College are reviewed and nominated to receive an MVP award based on their Application for Admission. Current students who are interested in joining the MVP organization must participate in an application process during the spring semester (application information can be obtained from the MVP Coordinator). Students who already have an MVP award and are truly engaged with and excited about their volunteer work do have the ability to receive a different scholarship after their first year.
