Health Services
Through a partnership with Sound Medical Associates, a subsidiary of Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, students have access to a team of medical professionals. Nurses and nurse practitioners are available during regular office hours. Physicians are available by appointment. When necessary, referrals can be made to some of the area's top medical specialists. While most services are covered by the student health fees, services such as immunizations, physicals, emergency room visits, pharmaceuticals, medical supplies, blood work, medical procedures and consultations off-campus are not covered.
All students are required to submit proof of immunizations and complete a health form prior to beginning their first semester at Mitchell College. Student athletes must provide an additional medical form yearly that clears them to play NCAA division III athletics. Detailed information about these processes is mailed to all incoming students after they have been accepted to the College. Specific questions about health records or immunization documentation can be addressed by contacting the Center for Health and Wellness at (860)701-5195.
Counseling
The Health and Wellness Center provides short term counseling services to students to ensure ongoing wellness. During college, students may require varying degrees of assistance, from minimal support for stress management to a referral to an off-campus agency for a more in depth evaluation for a chronic mental health issue. Students who wish to use these supports may schedule an appointment by phone or in person. During the initial counseling session, the counselor will assess the needs of the student and develop a plan to address areas of concern. This may include short-term weekly counseling sessions, participation in a support group, or referral to community counseling resources.
Health Education Programming
The College also provides preventative and educational programs, workshops, and clinics on campus throughout the year. These include; nutritional counseling, eating disorder supports, self esteem workshops, self help groups, stress management training, AIDS prevention training including free HIV testing information, substance abuse prevention, pregnancy counseling, and contraceptive education.
Health Insurance
All full-time students (resident & commuters) are required to have medical coverage under either a parent/guardian/spouse's insurance coverage or through a program offered by the college. Information on the college's insurance plan is mailed to students before the start of the Fall semester and the student bills include the option to purchase college insurance or to identify other coverage. For students who subscribe to the college's insurance plan, certain accident and sickness expenses, on or off campus, are covered in accordance with provisions of the policy in effect during the academic during the academic year (Fall and Spring semesters).
