Welcome to the Academic Affairs section of Mitchell College's website. We have an excellent combination of programs in the liberal arts and the professions. Our programs and services reflect the College's strong commitment to teaching and learning, to the value of the individual student, to preparing our students for a rewarding personal and professional life, and to developing an appreciation for the ongoing life of the mind.

Our degree programs have three parts. You will take courses in general education to help you develop the ability to think critically, to appreciate cultures other than your own, and to write clearly and persuasively, to understand the contributions to our society of the natural and social sciences and of the arts and humanities, to develop technological abilities and to be able to participate in and contribute to society. Courses in your major will assist you to master the area you have chosen to pursue in depth, and your elective courses are free choices in areas you have an interest in, or courses which can strengthen your major program.

When you visit Mitchell you will meet a faculty enthusiastic about working with you to achieve your academic and professional goals. Small classes are taught by an accomplished faculty to create an active learning environment in which ideas are explored and in which every student's voice is heard. Our support services include the Academic Success Center which provides support in all aspects of your work studies. Other support is the library which has a dedicated staff who will be involved in your education and sufficient library resources to facilitate your research and learning.

Your academic degree will impact on your during your whole life. Our excellent academic programs are delivered by a committed faculty whose first priority is you, the student. Here is a brief summary of our programs;

Behavioral Sciences Department

The majors within the Behavioral Sciences Department will provide you with an overall understanding of human behavior and prepare you to help solve scientific, social and business problems. Your studies will show you how human development and interaction can affect family development and relationships, multicultural issues, social policy and other topics. You can select from a variety of majors. For bachelor degrees we offer Human Development & Family Studies, Behavioral & Social Sciences or Psychology. Psychology majors can also elect to specialize in General Psychology, Community Psychology or Developmental Psychology. Associate degree seeking students can choose Psychology or Sociology.

As a student studying within the behavioral sciences area, you will learn about the human experience and how you can improve the quality of life of those around you. In addition to your liberal arts foundation and coursework within your chosen field of study, you will also benefit from participating in Mitchell's extensive internship program. Mitchell has an excellent relationship with a large selection of community agencies and organizations. Your internship will enable you to take the knowledge you've learned in the classroom and apply it to a real world setting.

Communication Arts Department

Mitchell's Communication Arts Department offers majors that provide you with skills in written, oral, interpersonal and visual communication. In addition to your general foundation in the study of communication, you can elect to concentrate in one of four distinct areas: Communication Technology, Interpersonal Communication, Organizational Management or Production & Performance. By studying the structure, patterns, and effects of communication on yourself and society, you will learn to improve your ability to interact effectively with others. Through your specific concentration coursework you can fine tune your focus in the area of communication that best fits your career path.

Working with student publications and campus organizations, you will have the opportunity to gain further valuable experience as a videographer, reporter, editor, events planner, sales representative or business manager. In addition, you will be able to complete two internships, enabling you to earn up to a total of 12 credit hours in actual work environments. A variety of career oriented internship positions are available in video production, radio-television, journalism, public relations, advertising, graphic design, management, marketing/sales, training/education, social services, and the arts. The result is that you will possess the critical knowledge and effective communication skills needed to compete in today's global workplace.

Early Childhood Education Department

The Early Childhood Education Department at Mitchell College offers you three distinctive options within the Early Childhood Education field. One is an associates degree in Early Childhood Education and the other two are bachelor degree programs in either Liberal and Professional Studies with Teacher Certification (Integrated Special Needs, Pre K - Grade 3) or Non-Teaching (Business Administration).

Whichever option you elect to pursue, what makes Mitchell's education program stand out from other colleges and universities is the amount of practical experience you gain in the education field. You'll have plenty of opportunities to observe, practice in, and learn from real classroom and child-care center programs. In addition, Mitchell's Early Childhood Education Club is one of the most active student organizations on campus. Club members participate in a variety of community outreach programs, as well as present at state, regional and national education conferences. This practical experience, together with your liberal arts foundation and advanced coursework in the child development, education and business areas will prepare you for either immediate employment as a teacher or child-care provider/administrator or pursue further advanced study in a variety of degree areas and settings.

Hospitality & Tourism Department

Hospitality & Tourism is one of the fastest growing and most dynamic fields of study. In fact, hospitality is the largest industry in the world, employing over 10.5 million workers in the United States and 112 million internationally. It generates more than $450 billion in annual revenues. Mitchell's Hospitality & Tourism Department offers majors that allow you to focus on one of two distinct areas: Hotel/Restaurant Management or Event Planning. Both programs are designed to prepare you for a broad range of managerial roles across the hospitality and tourism industry. The program focuses on management positions in hotels, restaurants, tourism, gaming, trades shows, conventions, recreation, food service and the culinary arts.

As a Hospitality & Tourism major, you would be required to perform 600 hours of hand's on experience through a cop-op or internship placement. In selecting your placement, you will benefit from Mitchell's unique location in Southeastern Connecticut, a prime New England vacation destination. Within minutes to the College's campus are two of the largest and most successful resort casinos in the world, as well as a variety of other recreation, entertainment and leisure venues. Each provides you with a wealth of opportunities for valuable fieldwork experiences.

The Humanities Department at Mitchell College offers numerous majors for you to pursue: Global Studies, Liberal & Professional Studie(Humanities, Individualized, Undeclared), and Liberal Studies (Fine Arts, History & Government, Humanities, Undeclared). If you are a student who values independent thought, diversity and flexibility or if you like the idea of sampling courses in a different interest areas, the Humanities has much to offer you. The Global Studies major is an interdisciplinary program designed to provide you with an understanding of the complex political, social, economic and cultural interrelationships which characterize the interdependent modern world. The Liberal & Professional Studies and Liberal Studies majors allow you to tailor your major to meet your own individual education and career goals by creating your own concentration.

An important part of all of these majors in learning how to apply what you've studied to your actual future career. Mitchell's outstanding internship program provides you with hand's on experience related to you major. You can also elect to participate in the College's Study Abroad Program and be immersed in a different culture. The College has study-abroad agreements with Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand; Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai, Thailand; Griffith College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland; and the University of Verona, Italy.

Mitchell College's Law & Justice Policy Studies Department offers exciting and distinctive degree programs in the rapidly-changing field of Criminal Justice and Homeland Security. In this program, you will get the advantage of a strong liberal arts foundation, while learning the ins and outs of our country's criminal justice and homeland security systems. Mitchell's majors emphasize the social control mechanisms of police, the courts and the correctional system, as well as governmental and non-governmental defense agencies. Coursework also deals with the scientific approach to criminal behavior, as well as the legal basis for the private security field, the history of the occupational safety movement, drugs and society, and deviance. In the Criminal Justice area, you can also elect to concentrate in one of three distinct program tracks: Justice Studies, Pre-Law or Programs & Treatment.

You also have many opportunities for out-of-classroom learning. You will visit local correctional institutions, participate in mock crime scene investigations, hear professionals discuss potential career paths, and learn about crime prevention techniques. A Pre-Law Society provides guest speakers, field trips and LSAT preparation. Internships in your second and fourth years places you "out in the field" with police officers, parole officers, probation officers, and in the correctional system.

The STEM Department at Mitchell College offers you a variety of program options. The Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Studies is an interdisciplinary major that can prepare you to be a steward of the earth's natural resources in your role as a citizen, politician or employee of industry or government. Through a foundation in the liberal arts coupled with coursework in the sciences, you will gain the knowledge and skills needed to fully understand the complexities of major environmental global issues.

For students interested in an associates degree, Mitchell offers majors in Mathematics, Pre-Allied Health, Pre-Medical, Pre-Nursing and Science. Each program provides you with both the liberal arts and program specific foundation you need for further advanced study in a wide variety of disciplines within the mathematics, health and science fields.

A key part of your education at Mitchell is our extensive internship program. With Mitchell waterfront campus and location in Southeastern Connecticut, you have access to an ideal setting for the study of the environment. In addition, our close proximity to area hospitals, long-term care facilities, and science related facilities affords you numerous opportunities to gain practical experience and better define your goals, options and potential career path.

The Department of Business Administration at Mitchell College offers Business Administration majors in a variety of specific bachelor degree areas: Accounting Management, Economic Development, Graphic Design & Marketing, Marketing, or Small Business Studies. Each of these majors provides a thorough knowledge of business practice, accounting terminology and theory, as well as a broad understanding of business management principles. This business foundation is then combined with specific content based coursework in your area of concentration. In addition, you'll explore interpersonal, customer service, and communication skills to prepare you operate a successful business. You'll also take courses focused on solving real-life business dilemmas, and topics such as product research, teamwork, decision-making, entrepreneurial creativity, information technology, and ethics.

A key focus on your studies will be your internship. Conducted within a business setting, this hand's on experience will enable you to examine your career options, build leadership skills and test your abilities. You can also gain valuable knowledge through your participation in the College's Business Club.

In addition to the bachelor degree program in Graphic Design & Marketing above, Mitchell also offers an associates degree in the area of Graphic Design. This program specifically focuses on the technical and conceptual aspects of graphic presentation.

Sports & Fitness Management

The Sports & Fitness Management Department offers bachelor degrees in Sport Management and Health Physical Education & Recreation (HPER), as well as an associates degree in Physical Education. Sport Management focuses on the practical and academic experiences necessary to be successful in the sport industry. Sport managers must have a fundamental understanding of the applications of business and in depth knowledge of the complexities of the sport world. Mitchell's Sport Management program will prepare you to meet the needs of a contemporary sport industry.

The HPER and Physical Education majors are designed to prepare students for a broad range of careers in the physical education, fitness and recreation fields, including executive-level positions requiring strong management and problem-solving capabilities. Non-school programs such as those offered at the YMCA, Boys and Girls Clubs, YWCA and Municipal Recreation Departments, demand prepared, well-rounded and enthusiastic graduates dedicated to positively impacting the lives of youths.

As a student in one of these majors, you would participate in Mitchell's outstanding internship program. You can elect to do your internship in a wide variety of settings ranging from professional sports teams, school athletic programs, parks and recreation programs, sporting goods companies, fitness facilities and more.
